Rittenhouse Square is a historic square in the Center City neighborhood of Philadelphia, PA. Please refer to my article on how to get to Rittenhouse Square, where to park and things to do in Rittenhouse Square. I have also written an article about the Saturday morning Farmers’ Market at Rittenhouse Square. In this article I wanted to focus on where to stay in Rittenhouse Square.
Why should you stay in Rittenhouse Square?
Rittenhouse Square is the name of a square that is at the corner of 18th Street and Walnut Street and also the name of a neighborhood within the Center City neighborhood of Philadelphia. The Rittenhouse Square neighborhood is the best neighborhood to stay if you are visiting Philadelphia. Rittenhouse Square is also very close to Suburban Station and 30th Street Stations. These two stations along with Jefferson Station are the major train stations of Philadelphia. You can travel to different parts of the City and most of the suburbs by train from this station.
All the major office buildings in the City of Philadelphia are either in Market Street or JFK Boulevard. Both Market Street and JFK Boulevard are very close to Rittenhouse Square. There are plenty of bars and restaurants on the square itself and also within walking distance of the square. Rittenhouse Square is also within walking distance of the major university campuses in University City (University of Pennsylvania and Drexel University).
Is Rittenhouse Square safe?
Rittenhouse Square is also one of the safest neighborhoods in Philadelphia . It is safe to walk around during the day and the evenings. During Spring, Summer and Fall, you will find a lot of people in the park even late at night.
Best Hotels to Stay in Rittenhouse Square.
I live in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. The following are the hotels that I would recommend. They are not listed in any particular order.
The Rittenhouse: The Rittenhouse (210 W Rittenhouse Square) is one of the two hotels that are directly on the square. It is part condominium and part 5 Star hotel. The hotel has several bars, restaurants and a spa. The Rittenhouse is the only hotel in this list that has a pool. The hotel is also pet friendly. Their Italian restaurant (Scarpetta) is one of my favorites.
Hyatt Centric: This is the newest hotel in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood. The hotel is just one block from the Square. Between the hotel and the Square you have the new but very popular Italian restaurant known as Via Locusta.
AKA Rittenhouse Square: AKA is the second hotel that is directly on the square. It is a hotel designed for longer stays. Most rooms have kitchens. The hotel has a nice fitness center and is very close to all the action. AKA is at the corner of 18th and Walnut Street. A.Kitchen & A.Bar (located at the corner of 18th and Walnut) are very popular spots to be seen in Rittenhouse Square.
1715 Rittenhouse Square: 1715 Rittenhouse Square is a boutique hotel that is half a block from Rittenhouse Square (Behind Barclay Prime). It is a small hotel on a very quiet street but very close to the action. There is a parking lot right in front of the hotel.
Hotel Sofitel: The Sofitel is a beautiful hotel that is right across the street from Kimpton Hotel Palomar (17th and Sansom Street). Chez Colette, a popular French restaurant is located inside the Sofitel. The hotel is a few blocks from Rittenhouse Square, but the location is still great.
Kimpton Hotel Palomar: Hotel Palomar is across the street from Hotel Sofitel. The Palomar is also a very nice hotel like the Sofitel. Very updated interiors. Palomar has a fitness center like the Sofitel. Next to the Kimpton, there is the Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse. The food is awesome and the interior is grand. Next to the lobby there is restaurant called Square 1682. Their weekend brunches are popular.
The Westin Philadelphia: The Westin is a very big hotel and is attached to the Liberty building (a high rise). The high rise has a shopping center (The Shops at Liberty Place) and a food court. The studio that I go to (Orangetheory Fitness) and my favorite hair salon (Style of Man) are in this shopping center. You can also enter the One Liberty Observation Deck from this food court. The observation deck offers a panoramic view of the city from the 57th floor.
Sonesta Philadelphia: The Sonesta is the farthest away from Rittenhouse Square in this list. But it is only four blocks from the Square. It is on Market Street, which is a very busy street. City Hall and Logan Square are about four blocks away. This hotel is very popular with the business travelers because it right next to all the office buildings on Market Street.
Pod Philly: The Pod Philly is the newest hotel in the Rittenhouse Square neighborhood and probably the least expensive. There are different types of room that you can select from including ones that have bunk beds.
ROOST Apartment Hotel: There are two ROOST Apartment Hotels near Rittenhouse Square (1831 Chestnut and 111 S. 15th St.). Both these hotels are new but they are located in historic buildings. These hotels are designed to help individuals who are transitioning from their current home, business relocation etc.
Warwick Hotel: The Warwick is a block away from Rittenhouse Square (17th and Chancellor Street). The Warwick is like the Rittenhouse Hotel. There are condos in the building also. One interesting amenity that this hotel offers is a hair salon! There are two very good restaurants one block from the Warwick, Pietro’s and Alma De Cuba.
There are many things to do in Philadelphia that are very close to Philadelphia, including visiting the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Rocky Statue, Rocky Steps, City Hall, Love Park and the Schuylkill River Park.
